Chapter 23
Maggie
“I’m fine.” I sighed, feeling relaxed for the first time since I woke up this morning. If there was a better place to be than Nick’s arms, I didn’t know where it was.
“Why don’t I believe you?”
I rolled my eyes and mumbled sarcastically, “Because you can read minds.”
“I can read you. I’m sorry about your family, Maggie.”
I shrugged. “It’s not like I’m not used to it. You shouldn’t have come with us. I warned you.” I couldn’t begin to articulate how sorry I was that Nick met my family, especially my sister. When Charity hit on Nick, it took every ounce of self-control I had not to get blood all over my mother’s white sofa.
“Hey,” he said softly. I tilted my head back to look at him. He cupped my cheek in his palm. “I’m glad I was there. You shouldn’t face stuff like that alone. They don’t have any right to treat you like that, Maggie. You deserved better.”
“That was the second holiday dinner this season where I didn’t make it to the meal. I’m two for two. That’s got to be some kind of dysfunctional family record.” I burrowed into his chest. “I don’t know why I keep going over there.”
“Yes, you do.” Nick kissed the top of my head.
I blew out a shuddering breath. “Is it so wrong that I want them to love and respect me for who I am?”
Nick laid his cheek on the top of my head and ran a hand up and down my back. I could feel the tension and stress that crept in at the mention of my family leech from my body.
“No baby. That’s not wrong. It’s how it should be. I don’t understand how they can treat you like they do.”
I leaned back. “Maybe I’m a suppressive person.”
He barked a laugh. “Are your parents in a cult?”
“I have considered it.” I smirked. “If my family are a bunch of assholes because they were brainwashed by a cult founded by some crazy old guy with bad teeth and a nautical fetish. It would make their actions a bit more bearable, you know?”
“Nautical fetish? You paint quite the picture. Thanks,” he deadpanned.
Addie came into the family room wrapped in a fluffy purple towel. Her hair still dripping and her skin flushed from the hot bath. “I’m done with my bath, Mommy. I’m gonna go put on my pj’s.”
“Did you let the water out of the tub?”
“Yes, Mommy.” Addie looked up at Nick. “Will you still be here so I can say goodnight, Nick?”
“I’ll still be here.” Nick tapped her nose.
“I’ll be right back. Feel free to smooch while I’m gone.” Addie giggled.
“Thanks, baby girl.”
“You’re welcome.” Addie grasped the top of her towel and ran to her room.
“Hey!” I called out to her. “Dry your hair before you put your top on or it will get wet.”
“Okay!” Addie called over shoulder.
